The Girls by Emma Cline

A sinister summer read to give you an eerie feeling from start to finish, The Girls reimagines the Charles Manson cult and the subsequent Sharon Tate murders through a new lens of obsession – the young girls who followed the cult leader.

Narrator Evie Boyd, now in the middle of her life, recounts the fateful summer in which she met Suzanne. Upon seeing her across the park, Evie develops an adolescent infatuation with Suzanne, with her wild hair and even wilder demeanor. She soon follows Suzanne down a dark rabbit hole that puts her inches away from a dark act that doesn't fully come to fruition until the end.

This is actually the third book I've read this year that focuses on summer (three's a trend!), but it's intoxicating in a kind of creepy way. A strange comparison, but if you liked the movie Lady Bird, this reads in a similar vein – except the cool girl is actually in a murderous cult and Evie doesn't seem to ever find her way to truly solid ground again.
